TRAVEL & WHAT'S NEW

Wellington hosts the Balloons and Bentleys weekend in Oct-Nov each year. The hot air balloonists and owners of Bentley cars create a great event for participants and onlookers alike. This photo was taken in 1999.
We had a caravan trip out west to Menindee Lakes and Broken Hill in November 1999. Here is an old wharf on the Darling river, which was used to load the bales of wool onto the barges which transported them to the ports during the 1800's.
The scrub country was comparatively green, due to all the rain, and not flat, as I had imagined, but had lots of low hills.  At sunset, along the shores of the Menindee Lakes, little rabbits frolic with tails bobbing.
At a Silverton Art Gallery, we bought some prints by an artist named Dynan, who captures the beauty of the outback scenery so well. The Darling river and Menindee Lakes are hauntingly lovely.
The two kangaroos standing between the trees at the right of this painting are almost impossible to see, so well do they blend with the landscape, which has its own attraction.  The low saltbush is also wonderful feed for stock.
When the Darling river floods, the waters spread out over the country for miles, and create their own special beauty and haven for birdlife.
